FIFA 18 players have been enjoying their own World Cup mode for a few weeks, but now FIFA Mobile has its own version of the event. From now until August 1st, folks can choose from 32 qualifying nations and play a unique campaign for the global competition. Fret not, countries that didn’t make it to the world’s stage: Like the console version, players can take one of 16 non-qualified nations through their own separate story mode.

What actually makes the PES 2017 really addictive is the game controls. Instead of adding on screen controls which feel unnameable on small screen, PES 2017 uses touch based gestures to control players. However, it has been implemented in a much better manner than FIFA Mobile. The entire left side of the screen serves as the joystick to control player movement, while tapping and holding the finger anywhere on the right side of the screen makes the player sprint. To command player to shoot, one needs to double tap on the screen. The game follows the same Ultimate Team model used by EA Sports in FIFA games now. You can build your team from scratch and hire players, managers and other staff. The game rewards players with in game currency after every match. The currency comes in handy for buying new players, training them and renewing their contract. You can speed up things using real money trough in app purchases. As interesting as this may sound on theory, the execution feels lacking. One of the primary reasons is down to the precision of controls, or lack thereof. FIFA Mobile has two control schemes – on-screen buttons, and a gesture-based system, which are better described as hands-on and hands-off respectively. With the first, you get a virtual stick to control direction, and three other buttons to pass, tackle, and shoot. With the hands-off approach, the game does everything itself – from dribbling past defenders to deciding when to pull the trigger. To get involved, you can tap a player to pass the ball to him, or flick with your finger towards goal to attempt a goal.

Most of all, never forget that if you don’t give your players some input, they’re going to do what they want. Sometimes that may be beneficial when you are just starting out and getting a feel for the game, but allowing the AI to be in control when close to goal is almost always a bad idea, one that will lead to goalkeepers claiming the ball many times without your side even getting off a shot.

The confusion continues when it comes to the various gameplay modes. FIFA Mobile is structured around three gameplay pillars, again very similar to Madden Mobile: Live Events, which are short challenges to earn various rewards; a Season mode, where you pit your squad against various real world clubs; and head-to-head play, either straight up or in user-created League tournaments.
